Breakroom Mores

Most of us work in office buildings where there is an established area in which to eat lunch... or to take your OSHA breaks during the day (I take mine via internet surfing... but that is beside the point).

Today, I would like to discuss an indicent that should be refrained from in breakrooms (or "coffee bars" as they are called here in my building).

Last week, I brought my lunch to work. (Tim, I was very efficient in the kitchen even though I was in there for more than 5 minutes. If you had posted earlier, I could have saved some time - maybe. But this, too, is beside the point.)

So I put my lunch in the community fridge (like most trusting people do in this era of peace that we find outselves in). That day, I had a meeting with my boss during lunch, so lunch was provided (the perks of working for oil companies these days). The next day, I was asked to take our new hire out to lunch... so my efficiently cooked meal was left in the community fridge for yet another day.

On Wednesday, I met a friend for lunch. Well, that evening, I found myself working later than normal, so I decided to retreive my lunch from the community fridge. I mosey into our coffee bar... excited about the chicken and green beans that awaited me. And then, to my great surprise/shock/awe, my lunch had been replaced with lettuce. Yes, LETTUCE. Just lettuce. No dressing... no croutons... no bacos... just leaves of green lettuce.

Now the point of this is simple - if you find your self needing a container to store your extra lettuce while at work, don't throw away a perfectly good (albeit two days old) lunch. This is not an accepted custom to be practiced in office breakrooms.

The last time I used our breakroom fridge was several years back. The folks building services had hired to clean the place had instituted a "end of the month" policy whereby any food left in the fridge at the end of the last Friday of the month would be thrown away.

When they disposed of an unopened six pack of bottled water, I gave up.

OK, so let me get this straight.

Somebody replaced the food in your container with lettuce? They took out your food from your container and put their lettuce in its place -- inside your container?

Dude ... that is grounds for resignation. I would quit.

I'm with steven w. murray - did we understand the story correctly? It seems awfully bold!

Did you do something to anger someone at work?

The way I see it, you have the right to replace someone else's food now. The issue is what food to use as the replacement dish. I say collard (not colored!) greens cooked with ham hocks. And, leave the lid open a little so all the food in the fridge has a hint of the odor.

Have you put on weight - maybe it was a hint?! A rude hint if it was a hint! I hope you replaced the lettuce with a candy bar!

Chet... you are so wise. Like a minature buddha covered with hair.

Ms. Elly... I had not considered that angle. I will get back in the gym stat.

I say unplug the entire fridge and leave a note saying, "I don't like lettuce."

HA Kim!!! Todd, I was in our teacher workroom, which has a frig, and noticed a big sign on the door of the frig: PLEASE DO NOT TAKE FOOD THAT IS NOT YOURS. I had to smile and think of your blog entry. That is why I kept the mini frig (brother got it when he went to college) to keep in my classroom. Never know when it might go out, but until then...no lettuce for me!

Todd, it was an office-wide bet. The question was what you would do if we switched your food. I said you would blog about it. I won. Thanks.

Oh Todd...I can so relate to your frustrations. I went to look for my food in our small community fridge one evening when I too was working late, only to find that a coworker had "accidentally" picked up my food instead of his own leftovers. Even at Pine Cove CHRISTIAN Camps this type of thing has somewhat happened! My coworker and I now have our own mini fridge in our office. But I can't believe someone would throw away your food and use YOUR container for THEIR lettuce. That's just weird!

Was it really a bet? That is TOO funny! How does it feel to be so transparent? Let us know how the retaliation prank goes!

Dear Todd -
I love reading your friend, Laurie's blogs. You should marry her.

Dear Todd -
Your friend knelson is clearly a brilliant and wonderful person. But I already have so many marriage proposals flying at me...what's a girl to do?

knelson is brilliant and wonderful, indeed. i am not sure i can compete with the ring that kirk is offering, though... i intend to live a much more meager lifestyle.
